Daystate Black Wolf TAC HiLite

$3,065.00

Daystate understands better than any other airgun company that, to stay relevant, progress must be ongoing, new ideas investigated and pursued. That’s why, for 50 years, Daystate has been in a state of constant development, making major leaps forward in airgun technology. In fact, many features found on other airgunmakers’ rifles were pioneered by Daystate.

As much as Blackwolf has to offer 12 ft/lbs shooters in .177 and .22, it’s the higher-powered versions are where the performance part of the package really comes into play. The Blackwolf features the largest regulator chamber ever fitted to a Daystate PCP. Also, its 20-level power wheel operates a progressive shaft, allowing you to gear hammer spring-tension to exactly what’s needed.

Another fantastic feature is the ability to change caliber and barrel lengths in minutes – a feature Daystate initially developed on its Delta Wolf. Four barrel calibers, plus the ability to adjust power levels truly makes the concept of ‘multiple rifles in one’ a reality.

In addition to the barrel,  hammer springs, spring tension and regulator pressure can all be changed on-the-fly. This lets you tune the rifle to a specific power and projectile combination if you wish. Note the word ‘projectile’. Yes, Blackwolf has been designed to also take our 711mm SLUG barrel!

Blackwolf is a gun platform, and follows the company’s modular design philosophy. So, many components are interchangeable. In fact, all stocks, barrels, air bottles and air cylinders are available separately, making it possible to change and upgrade Blackwolf as and when your shooting needs change.

Daystate Black Wolf TAC HiLite Features:

  1. Modular Platform Design – Interchangeable componentry throughout, lets you build the exact rifle you want for every shooting need, from hunting to target work. One gun; multiple personalities!
  2. Slug Projectile Compatible– There’s even a special, 711mm-long barrel developed especially for slugs!
  3. New Eight-Point Adjustable Trigger – With pull-weight settings from 8oz to 3.5lbs (225g – 1.6kg), you can choose to suit your trigger finger as well as the rifle’s intended discipline. Besides travel and weight, the blade is also adjustable for position in the x, y and z planes
  4. Fast Change Calibre Changes – Blackwolf barrels are designed to be easily removable for fast switching to different calibers or lengths to shoot your  shooting needs
  5. Tensioned Art Barrel System – Developed by our Accuracy Research Team, a tensioning system is used to increase barrel rigidity and improve extreme long-range accuracy
  6. 20-Stage Integral Power Adjuster – Allows on-the-fly adjustments by simply rotating a numbered wheel. So you can set the rifle’s output to suit both the shooting situation and the pellet/slug type
  7. Low Profile for Better Target Alignment – We made the Blackwolf’s  trigger-to-barrel center closer to improve ‘pointability’  and handling
  8. Ambidextrous – We made the Blackwolf’s stock ambi, so why wouldn’t we make its sidelever cocking system swappable? Left side or right – you choose… and it only takes a few minutes and a couple of hex keys for you to do
  9. AR-Safety Catch Lever – Reversible or removable (in a couple of minutes) to suit your shooting configuration, the Blackwolf’s safety is perfectly positioned for ergonomic efficiency
  10. Angled Picatinny Scope Rail – Offering a sturdier mounting platform than conventional airgun ‘dovetails’, and more appropriate for modern digital and thermal scopes. Blackwolf’s 21mm rail is precision machined with a 0.3-degree (20MOA) downward ’tilt’ to improve scope alignment at longer ranges
  11. Adjustable Cheekpiece and Buttpad – Not just to suit right- and left-handed shooting, the Blackwolf’s height adjustable cheek and butt means you can dial in a personally tailored gunfit to suit your stance, equipment and discipline
  12. Bottle or Cylinder Options – The Blackwolf models are offered in both HiLite Carbon bottle and Alloy Cylinder  configurations to suit your preference for balance, shot-count and look
  13. Revolutionary Titanium Firing Valve System – Lightweight Titanium reduces valve weight and maintains incredible strength in operation. This results in less inertia for a smoother firing cycle, and faster closing to increase available energy and improve the shots-per-charge count
  14. Interchangeable Stocks – Choose your Blackwolf’s livery from four options: Standard (black wood), Laminate (grey/black wood), Walnut and a ‘TAC’ multi-adjustable Tactical chassis
  15. Regulated Like No Other – The Blackwolf’s design incorporates the largest reg chamber of any Daystate PCP model to ensure repeatable shot-to-shot consistency, regardless of the power level your rifle’s set at and ambient climatic conditions
  16. Upgradable Platform – The Blackwolf’s modular design is not just versatile, it’s also future-proofed. Our ongoing R&D commitment to the new Blackwolf platform means that you’ll be able to enjoy retrofittable upgrades to its power delivery system as and when we release them

Unlocking Maximum Potential: FAC Configurations, Power Options, Calibers, and Barrel Systems of the Daystate Black Wolf TAC HiLite

The Daystate Black Wolf TAC HiLite truly shines when shooters explore its high-power FAC (Firearms Certificate) capabilities. These configurations deliver exceptional performance that serious enthusiasts and professionals demand. Whether greater downrange energy, extended effective range, or specialized slug shooting is needed, the platform adapts seamlessly while maintaining the precision and modularity that define the Black Wolf series.

Transitioning smoothly from sub-12 ft/lb UK-legal models, the FAC variants open new horizons. Advanced engineering, including the largest regulator chamber ever fitted to a Daystate PCP, ensures consistent velocity and impressive shot counts even at elevated power levels. Shooters gain confidence knowing that every component has been optimized for demanding applications.

Understanding FAC Variants of the Daystate Black Wolf TAC HiLite

FAC versions of the Daystate Black Wolf TAC HiLite are engineered for users who hold the appropriate certification. These rifles provide significantly higher muzzle energies while preserving the lightweight HiLite carbon fiber bottle advantages. The result is a balanced, high-performance platform suitable for long-range target work, ethical pest control at distance, and competitive disciplines that benefit from additional power.

Power output in FAC models reaches impressive levels. Configurations often exceed 35 ft/lbs in smaller calibers and climb well beyond 100 ft/lbs in larger ones. The mechanical design, free from electronic dependencies, offers reliability that many experienced shooters prefer in the field or on the range. Moreover, the 20-position power adjuster allows fine-tuning that matches specific needs without requiring complex tools.

Key advantages of choosing an FAC Daystate Black Wolf TAC HiLite include:

  • Substantially increased muzzle energy for better terminal performance on suitable quarry or targets.
  • Enhanced velocity retention over distance, improving wind resistance and trajectory.
  • Greater versatility for shooters who operate in regions where higher-power air rifles are permitted.
  • Maintained modularity, so caliber and barrel swaps remain quick and straightforward.

Many owners report that the transition to FAC feels natural. The rifle’s adjustable TAC chassis accommodates the slightly different recoil characteristics and shooting styles associated with higher power outputs.

Comprehensive Power Adjustment and Tuning Capabilities

Power management in the Daystate Black Wolf TAC HiLite stands out as one of its strongest features. A progressive 20-position power wheel works in harmony with an easily accessible hammer spring system. This combination gives users precise control over output, ranging from plinking levels up to maximum FAC performance.

In practice, shooters appreciate how the large regulator chamber stabilizes pressure. Velocity variations often stay remarkably low, even during extended strings. For example, many .22 FAC setups achieve consistent velocities that support sub-MOA accuracy at ranges previously challenging for air rifles.

Power-related highlights that deliver real results:

  • Progressive power wheel — Allows incremental adjustments that match pellet or slug weight perfectly.
  • Optional hammer spring changes — Quick swaps expand the tuning window dramatically for different calibers and barrel lengths.
  • Volumax plenum upgrade — Available on TAC and FAC models, this increases air volume ahead of the valve for higher energy potential without sacrificing efficiency.
  • Titanium firing valve stem — Reduces wear and improves consistency at elevated power levels.

Experienced tuners particularly value the mechanical simplicity. Adjustments can be made at the range or in the field, so experimentation becomes part of the enjoyment rather than a chore. Many report achieving optimal tunes that balance power, shot count, and accuracy for their preferred applications.

Exploring Available Calibers for Every Purpose

The Daystate Black Wolf TAC HiLite offers a thoughtfully selected range of calibers. This ensures every shooter finds an option that aligns with their goals, whether precision target shooting, pest control, or long-range slug work.

  • .177 Caliber: Favored for its flat trajectory and high pellet velocity. In FAC configurations, this caliber excels at longer ranges with excellent wind bucking when paired with appropriate slugs or heavy pellets. Many competitive shooters select .177 for its inherent accuracy potential.
  • .22 Caliber: Widely regarded as a versatile all-rounder. Sub-12 ft/lb versions deliver satisfying performance for general use, while FAC models push energies into the 50-80+ ft/lb range. This makes .22 ideal for extended pest control sessions or dynamic target shooting.
  • .25 Caliber: Delivers noticeably more downrange energy. FAC .25 setups are popular among hunters and long-range enthusiasts who appreciate the balance of manageable recoil and effective terminal performance.
  • .30 Caliber: The big-bore option that maximizes power. FAC .30 configurations can exceed 120-135 ft/lbs, making them suitable for larger quarry or maximum-impact applications where ethical shot placement remains paramount.

Benefits across calibers that inclusive shooters appreciate:

  • Magazines are caliber-specific yet easy to load and reliable, holding 13 rounds in .177, 11 in .22, 10 in .25, and 8 in .30.
  • Quick caliber swaps via the barrel system encourage experimentation and customization.
  • All options benefit from the same advanced regulation and power adjustment features.
  • Left- and right-handed users enjoy equal comfort thanks to the ambidextrous design.

Shooters often start with .22 for its forgiving nature before exploring .25 or .30 as skills and requirements evolve. The platform grows with the user, providing long-term value and sustained engagement.

Precision Barrel Options and Lothar Walther Engineering

Barrels represent a cornerstone of the Daystate Black Wolf TAC HiLite’s performance. All barrels are crafted by the renowned Lothar Walther and designed for effortless interchangeability. This system allows users to optimize the rifle for different distances, calibers, and projectile types without specialized gunsmithing.

Available lengths include:

  • 17-inch (430mm): Standard on many HiLite TAC models, particularly suited to sub-12 ft/lb and shorter-range FAC applications. Its compact profile enhances maneuverability while still delivering excellent accuracy.
  • 23-inch (600mm): A popular middle ground that balances velocity gain with manageable overall length. This length performs admirably across .177 to .30 calibers in FAC setups.
  • 28-inch (711mm): The flagship choice for maximum performance, especially in slug-optimized configurations. Longer barrels extract more velocity from the available air, improving ballistics for extreme long-range shooting.

Specialized barrel features that enhance results:

  • Slug-optimized variants — Specifically rifled and contoured for the heavier, longer projectiles popular in high-power shooting.
  • Tensioned barrel system — Reduces vibrations and improves consistency, particularly beneficial in higher-power setups.
  • Carbon fiber shrouding — Provides sound moderation and protection while keeping weight low in HiLite models.
  • 1/2” UNF threading — Makes suppressor attachment straightforward for quieter operation.

Many owners praise how barrel changes take only minutes. This flexibility means one rifle can serve multiple roles throughout the year. For instance, a 17-inch .22 barrel might be used for dynamic woodland pest control, while a 28-inch .25 or .30 slug barrel handles open-field or long-range bench work.

Performance Expectations Across Configurations

Real-world results with the Daystate Black Wolf TAC HiLite vary based on caliber, barrel length, power setting, and projectile choice. However, consistent themes emerge from testing and user feedback.

In FAC .177 setups with the 28-inch barrel, velocities often support effective ranges well beyond traditional air rifle limits when using appropriate slugs. .22 FAC models frequently achieve 50-80+ ft/lbs with tight groupings that impress even experienced firearms shooters. Larger calibers in .25 and .30 push the platform into big-bore territory, where energies above 100 ft/lbs become readily attainable.

Typical performance characteristics include:

  • Excellent shot-to-shot consistency thanks to superior regulation.
  • High shot counts relative to power output, especially with the HiLite carbon fiber bottles (300cc, 480cc, or 580cc options).
  • Low felt recoil that the adjustable TAC stock further mitigates.
  • Impressive accuracy potential, with many users reporting sub-MOA groups when conditions and ammunition are optimized.

These characteristics make the rifle suitable for a wide audience, from competitive benchrest shooters to ethical hunters who value precision and adaptability.

The Rich Heritage Behind the Daystate Black Wolf TAC HiLite

Daystate stands as a true pioneer in the airgun world. Founded in 1978 in Eccleshall, Staffordshire, England, the company began with a mission to produce air-powered tranquillizer guns for pest control. Visionary founders Don Lowndes, Jim Phillips, Ken Gibbon, and Mike Seddon created the initial Air Ranger model. By 1980, a commission from Rentokil led to the iconic Huntsman, a rifle still in production today in evolved forms.

Daystate earned recognition as the first manufacturer of modern pre-charged pneumatics (PCPs). This innovation sparked a revolution in airgunning that continues to influence the industry. Over more than 45 years, Daystate has consistently pushed technological boundaries while maintaining British engineering excellence. The Black Wolf platform, including the TAC HiLite variant, represents the latest chapter in this legacy. It returns to robust mechanical roots while incorporating decades of refinement in modularity, regulation, and performance.

Shooters who choose Daystate rifles gain more than hardware. They connect with a brand that has shaped modern PCP design and earned trust through reliability and innovation.

How the Daystate Black Wolf TAC HiLite Compares to Other Models

The Black Wolf series differentiates itself through its fully mechanical design and exceptional modularity. Unlike electronic predecessors such as the Delta Wolf or Alpha Wolf, the Black Wolf eliminates reliance on batteries and complex circuitry. This shift delivers simpler operation and greater long-term reliability for many users.

Compared to the long-standing Wolverine, the Black Wolf offers a completely new trigger system, larger regulator chamber, and improved power adjuster. The TAC chassis provides superior adjustability and accessory mounting options over traditional stocks.

Standout advantages over competitors include:

  • Versus FX or Brocock models — Superior British craftsmanship, easier barrel/caliber swaps, and mechanical simplicity without sacrificing power or accuracy.
  • HiLite vs Cylinder versions — The carbon fiber bottle in HiLite models reduces weight (around 6.4 lbs unscoped) and improves balance for dynamic shooting, while cylinder models offer slightly different handling characteristics.
  • Against traditional Daystate Huntsman — Far greater customization, higher power potential in FAC versions, and tactical ergonomics suited to modern applications.

Enthusiasts often describe the Black Wolf as the ideal blend of Wolverine reliability and Ghost-like modularity. This creates a future-proof platform that adapts as your needs evolve.

Essential Maintenance Guide for Long-Term Performance

Proper care keeps your Daystate Black Wolf TAC HiLite performing at its peak for years. Daystate recommends professional servicing every three years for optimal function. Additionally, inspect air cylinders or bottles every five years and consider replacement after ten years of use.

Daily and periodic maintenance steps include:

  • Clean the barrel every 500 shots using a bore snake or lightly oiled felt pellets—avoid wire brushes.
  • Sparingly lubricate the breech probe and side lever pivots with light grease or oil.
  • Check O-rings and seals during fills for signs of wear.
  • Store the rifle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, preferably in a protective case.

FAQ

  • Spring-Piston (Break-Barrel or Underlever): Cock by compressing a spring. Reliable, no external air source needed, but can have more recoil (“spring twang”) and require technique to shoot accurately.
  • Pre-Charged Pneumatic (PCP): Filled from a scuba tank, compressor, or pump. High power, low recoil, multiple shots per fill. Popular for precision and hunting.
  • CO₂: Powered by disposable cartridges. Good for pistols and semi-auto/repeaters, but performance drops in cold weather.
  • Multi-Pump Pneumatic: Hand-pumped to build pressure. Versatile but requires effort.
  • Gas Ram (Nitro Piston): Uses compressed gas instead of a metal spring. Smoother than traditional springers.

Calibers: Most common are .177 (4.5mm) for speed/flat trajectory and general use, and .22 (5.5mm) for better hunting knockdown power. Larger “big bore” (.25, .30, .357+) exist for hunting bigger game where legal.

Yes, many modern PCP and springers deliver enough energy for small game (rabbits, squirrels, birds) and even larger game in some areas. Muzzle energy (in ft-lbs or joules) matters more than velocity alone. Always match caliber, pellet weight, and energy to the game and check local hunting regs.

Treat every airgun as if it is loaded.

  • Always point the muzzle in a safe direction.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
  • Know your target and what is beyond it (pellets can ricochet or travel far).
  • Wear eye protection.
  • Store unloaded, out of reach of children/untrained users, and ideally locked.
  • Never shoot at hard surfaces or in areas where pellets could escape your property.

Follow these rules strictly—airguns cause real injuries.

Laws differ dramatically by country, state/province, and even city. Always verify current local laws before buying, owning, transporting, or using an airgun. Age restrictions (often 18+) are common.

Examples (summaries only; check official sources):

  • UK: Air rifles ≤12 ft-lbs (16.3 joules) and pistols ≤6 ft-lbs generally do not require a license (FAC needed above that).
  • USA: Varies by state. Some treat powerful airguns as firearms; others do not. Many states now allow big-game hunting with air rifles.
  • Canada: Some airguns classified as firearms if they exceed velocity/energy thresholds.
  • Australia: Often treated as firearms; licensing/registration required in most states.
  • EU/France/Belgium/etc.: Varies; many allow low-power (<20J) guns freely to adults, with higher power needing permits. Germany has strict ~7.5J limits in some contexts.
  • Other countries: Some have no restrictions below certain energies; others ban or heavily regulate them.

Resources: Wikipedia “Air gun laws”, airgun forums, or official government sites. For travel, research transit laws carefully.

Consider:

  • Purpose: Plinking/backyard → lower power springer or CO₂. Hunting/precision → PCP.
  • Budget: Entry-level springers are affordable; PCPs need a fill system (extra cost).
  • .177 vs .22: .177 easier for beginners/targets; .22 better for hunting.
  • Power source: Convenience vs performance.
  • Test pellets in your gun—accuracy varies.

Buy from reputable dealers and consider warranties.

  • Clean barrel periodically (especially if accuracy drops) with patches and appropriate tools/solvents. Avoid over-oiling.
  • Lubricate moving parts and seals with airgun-specific oil (not general gun oil). Springers need piston seal oil occasionally.
  • Check screws, seals for leaks (PCP), and safety mechanisms regularly.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, ideally in a case. Avoid leaving cocked for long periods.

Follow your model’s manual. Basic care extends life significantly.

  • Wrong pellets for your barrel/caliber.
  • “Death grip” or poor shooting form (especially with springers—let the gun recoil naturally).
  • Loose scopes or mounts.
  • Ignoring safety or local laws.
  • Over-oiling or shooting with obstructions.

Pellets are the most common projectile (lead or lead-free). Match them to your gun, caliber, and purpose—test several brands as accuracy varies by barrel.

  • Domed (Round-Head): Best all-rounder. Excellent accuracy, ballistic coefficient, and energy retention. Ideal for target shooting, field target, and general hunting (e.g., JSB Exact, Air Arms Diabolo Field, H&N Field Target Trophy).
  • Wadcutter (Flat-Head): Clean holes in paper. Best for close-range target/plinking (under 20-25 yards).
  • Hollow Point: Expands on impact for better energy dump. Good for small game hunting (e.g., Predator Polymag, H&N Terminator).
  • Pointed: More penetration, but often less accurate than domed.
  • Slugs: Heavier, more aerodynamic for high-power PCPs at longer ranges (better for big game where legal).

Tips: Heavier pellets in .22/.25 for hunting (better momentum). Lighter in .177 for speed/flat trajectory. Always check head size fit (e.g., 4.51-4.53mm variants).

Muzzle energy (ft-lbs or joules) matters more than velocity. Ethical shots require precise placement (head/heart-lung) within effective range.

Rough Guidelines (adjust for distance, pellet, and local laws):

  • Small game (squirrels, rabbits, birds): 9-20+ FPE, .177/.22.
  • Medium (raccoons, etc.): 25+ FPE, .22/.25 recommended.
  • Larger game: 40-100+ FPE in .30+ calibers (up to big bore for deer/hogs where permitted).

PCPs dominate serious hunting due to power and shot count. Springers/gas rams work well for small game but require skill. Always prioritize clean kills and check seasons/species rules.

  • Barrel Cleaning: Use a pull-through kit or rod with patches. Avoid brushes that could damage rifling. Clean when accuracy drops or after 500-1000 shots.
  • Lubrication: Airgun-specific silicone oil for seals/O-rings (sparingly—excess causes dieseling in springers). Springers may need piston lube periodically.
  • PCP Specific: Check for leaks (soapy water test), monitor regulator/hammer settings, and keep fill systems clean. Don’t exceed rated pressure.
  • General: Tighten stock screws, inspect for wear, store properly. Chronograph shots to track consistency.

Common Issues:

  • Inconsistent velocity → dirty barrel, bad pellets, or seal problems.
  • Spring “twang” → tuning or proper hold.
  • Low power → worn seals or under/over-pumping.

Toggle Content

  • Scopes: Airgun-rated (hold zero under recoil). 3-9x or 4-12x common.
  • Fill Systems: Hand pumps, compressors, or tanks for PCPs.
  • Safety Gear: Eye/ear protection, targets with backstops.
  • Noise: Airguns quieter than firearms, but moderators help further.

Budget Tip: Start with a quality springer (~$150-400) before investing in PCP setup.
